Onwards to the last road trip!

A small but enthusiastic contingent of Crows travelled East to Montreal on Friday 1st May, to caw-on our beloved Rise FC in their first away game of the new season.

Crows never forget a face and we recall the last time we faced the Roses on home turf and we came away with a fantastic win, so there was every reason to feel hopeful. But this is a very different Rise team, with many of our play makers and defensive stalwarts leaving at the end of our inaugural season. We have some young and amazing talented players who joined our crew this year but one thing that seems obvious is the time it takes to jell as a team and we clearly are struggling to find our rhythm and form. The Roses were lightning fast on the right wing especially and wasted no time stamping their emphatic mark hitting the back of the net in the first 13 minutes of play.

Five of us sang “The Rise is fine” and hoped our voices carried over the mega-amped music but we couldn’t match them for pace and purpose and the game ended in a disappointing 4-0.

Anja and the team came over to thank us for being there and we tried our best to cheer them up and brush off the loss. We would be cheering them on in our mid-week battle on Wednesday against Ottawa.

Fast forward then and we settled into the supporters section behind the Peregrines (home supporters) and their drums. We were up for the challenge, having introduced ourselves to their group and sharing the love for all things women’s footy and supporters culture. They were cool with us waving our banners and cheering right next to them.

Sad to say we were front and centre then for another struggle against an in form Rapids, who having just come off a defiant win against Calgary proved the Rise were not going to spoil their mid week party.

Some tricky calls went against us for sure in this game but sadly we couldn’t find our stride and fell again to another 4-0 result. This despite a strong showing by Jess DeFillipo coming on at the half and running her legs off to get the Rise going.

So, two disappointing results on the road. But, Crows are loyal and creative birds and we know we will find our way as we settle as a new team. Coaches Anja, Katie and Erin will work their magic and we will return to winning ways.

And Crows will be there to support our team home and away!
