Open Practice with the Rise

Spring has finally sprung in Vancouver and what better way to kick it off by watching some of your favorite soccer players out in the sunshine?
This past Saturday, Rise seasons ticket holders and Crow Collective supporter group members were treated to a nice surprise – a chance to watch a Rise training followed by a meet and greet with the players.
Despite the last minute nature of the event, there was a sizeable crowd formed in the bleachers of the South Turf Field of the UBC Training Facility, watching as coach Anja guided the Rise players through some drills. Looking around at those gathered you could feel the excitement for this inaugural season, as people pointed out their favourite players and chatted about the upcoming home opener. The enthusiasm and support for the team was evident from the many Rise scarves, hats, shirts and sweaters proudly worn (which we heard the store is restocking soon, after selling out recently). There were even some Rise Sunshine jerseys peppered throughout the crowd.

As the team began a scrimmage towards the end of training, the crowd joked about which side we should be cheering for. The laughter and positive chatter from the fans and supporters floated on the spring breeze as the team on the field called out to each other for passes and shouted words of encouragement to their teammates.
Following training, the crowd made their way over to a small plaza where the players arrived and were stationed across the tables that had been set up. With line-ups of excited fans in front of every player, they happily signed the many scarves, jerseys, sweaters, cards, hats and other items the fans proudly held out to them. Shaking hands, signing items, taking photos and chatting with each fan, the players spent time connecting with every person who approached them and the strong feeling of community was evident. Players didn’t leave until every fan that wanted a photo or signature had gotten them, even pausing to pet Zeus, a supporter’s pup who had come out to watch.
It was a fantastic opportunity to see some of the skills and camaraderie the Rise team has with each other on the field, as well as how much support and excitement the Rise have from the fans and supporters for this inaugural season.
